Clinical profile

Dr. Nijjer is an award-winning Consultant Cardiologist specialising in Interventional Cardiology. He works at both the Hammersmith Hospital and Chelsea & Westminster Foundation NHS Trust. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London and is the training lead for Interventional Cardiology training in North West London. In addition to his senior role on the Cardiology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, he has also been selected as an Emerging Leader for the British Cardiovascular Society.

He specialises in coronary intervention and focused his clinical practice in the management of patients with angina, myocardial infarction and the risk factors that cause coronary artery disease - including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. He has detailed knowledge of the use of blood thinning medication used to reduce heart attack and stroke risk. He uses the latest invasive and non-invasive techniques and approaches to assess and treat coronary arteries. His PhD research and ongoing academic work have been published in the highest-rated medical journals. He is an internationally recognised speaker on advanced cardiovascular therapies - including lifestyle, medical and technological. His practice encompasses all aspects of cardiology and he enjoys applying the latest research and techniques to help his patients.

Research and Training

Dr. Nijjer studied medicine at the University of Bristol, where he graduated with Honours with two scholarships, many academic prizes including the highest-rated thesis and the prestigious Wolfson Award from the Royal College of Physicians. He undertook his clinical training at some of the most prestigious hospitals in London, including the Hammersmith Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital, The Royal Brompton Hospital and Harefield Hospital.

Dr. Nijjer is committed to the better treatment of patients through the development and application of new medical technologies. His PhD, funded by the Medical Research Council and awarded by Imperial College, involved the development of new techniques (iFR and iFR-pullback) to measure blood flow in coronary arteries with blockages. Dr Nijjer pioneered the use of iFR-pullback to better treat coronary blockages and this technology has been used in thousands of patients around the world. Dr Nijjer has over 90 peer-reviewed papers in respected journals and has written several books.

He is an established expert in invasive coronary physiology which can help guide Cardiologists on when and where a coronary stent is needed. He has been a proctor for major industry partners and he is regularly invited as a speaker at international conferences including the American College of Cardiology and TCT.

Qualifications and Awards

In addition to his Medical Qualifications, Dr Nijjer has an intercalated BSc in Pharmacology which was awarded with the highest rated thesis and highest examination performance. He was awarded multiple awards at Medical School, including the Romeo Vecht Prize in Cardiology. Following medical qualification, he gained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) at the earliest opportunity and has the European Examinations for Cardiology. He undertook higher degree research at Imperial College and was awarded a PhD. Work from this research was awarded prizes from the Royal Society of Medicine, the British Cardiovascular Society and the British Cardiac Intervention Society.
