TAVI is a minimally invasive or ‘keyhole’ procedure that does not require opening the chest - this means smaller incisions, reduced risk of infection, and a quicker recovery time. Patients are usually able to leave the hospital in a few days. Because it’s less invasive, patients experience less pain post-procedure, leading to a more comfortable recovery. TAVI is particularly beneficial for older patients, who may not be suitable candidates for the higher risks of open-heart surgery.
- Severe aortic stenosis can mean a high risk of complications including heart failure and heart attack
- Complications can be avoided by early treatment
- With swift action, we can get you back to enjoying a full and symptom-free life

First, you will meet the team looking after you during your procedure and provide your consent. You will be introduced to everyone in the theatre involved in your care.
You will lie on the operating table and be given an anaesthetic. Often, patients are given light sedation rather than full anaesthesia. You may be drowsy but awake and won’t feel pain during the procedure.
Your cardiologist will begin by making a small incision in your groin to access an artery with a thin tube. The doctor guides a catheter through the artery to your heart. The new valve is placed inside your old, narrowed valve and gently expanded. It begins working immediately. The procedure usually takes around 1 hour, although more complex cases can take longer.
You will then be taken to a ward to recover where you will be monitored by the inpatient team who will take care of you, answer any questions you might have, and notify you when you can go home. You will usually stay overnight, sometimes for more than one night depending on your recovery and mobility after the procedure.
TAVI at OHC offers significant benefits for patients with aortic stenosis, helping you regain your quality of life. If you’re living with chest pain and shortness of breath, TAVI can offer relief, peace of mind, and a path back to feeling like yourself again.
Here’s how it can help:
Relief from Symptoms: TAVI can reduce or eliminate symptoms that interfere with your life, like chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and swollen ankles or feet. Many people feel dramatic improvement in their daily energy and comfort.
Lower Risk of Complications: Reduced need for intensive care or long rehabilitation, reduced bleeding, and lower risk of infection vs open heart surgery.
Improved Quality of Life: Feel more confident being active, travelling, or simply enjoying everyday activities. Many patients report a renewed sense of freedom and well-being after TAVI.
TAVI offers a way to feel better, live longer, and recover faster—without the challenges of traditional surgery. For many people, it can truly be life-changing.
TAVI with OHC is generally a safe procedure, especially when performed by an experienced team. Like any procedure, TAVI has some risks, though serious complications are rare. These may include:
Our team will carefully evaluate whether the benefits outweigh the risks in your individual case. One of the benefits of TAVI with OHC is our multi-disciplinary approach – you will have the input of several of the best cardiologists and minimally invasive surgeons in the world reviewing your case before a decision is made on whether to offer you the treatment.
Our consultants will assess your suitability for TAVI. While traditional heart surgery is still required for some patients, TAVI has become an excellent alternative for many patients. TAVI is especially helpful for those who are older or have other health conditions that make open-heart surgery riskier.
We pick the best from multiple types of valves, depending on your personal situation. Your consultant will confirm the valve we will use before your operation, so you are fully informed and feel comfortable with the plan for your procedure.
