DESIGNED WITH YOU IN MIND

When Getting Your Breath Feels Harder Than It Should

The British Heart Foundation notes that breathlessness is a common symptom of several serious but treatable heart conditions, including heart failure, valve disease, and atrial fibrillation. Nearly 900,000 people in the UK are living with heart failure. The good news is that the majority of individuals with these conditions can continue to live a long, full life with the right diagnosis and support.

Breathlessness deserves proper attention, not just a recommendation to 'keep an eye' and come back in six weeks, and not reassurance based on a single test that only tells part of the story. The heart and lungs are closely connected, and symptoms like these can come from either, or both. Finding out which requires a thorough, joined-up assessment that can give you concrete answers.

You may benefit from our Breathlessness Diagnostic Package if you:

  • Have noticed breathlessness when walking or during other effortless activities (stairs, lying down).
  • Experience ankle swelling, unusual fatigue, or chest discomfort.
  • Have risk factors like high blood pressure, a smoking history, or a family history of heart disease.
  • Have had inconclusive tests and want a joined-up assessment.

Real Outcomes For Patients - What Getting Answers Can Do For You

Breathlessness often comes on gradually over time. It might start with the stairs that never used to bother you. Perhaps you start waking in the night, not quite knowing why, only that your chest feels tight and your breath feels short.

There is a real difference between being told nothing serious was found on one test and knowing with absolute certainty that both your heart and lungs have been thoroughly assessed by a specialist who knows exactly what they’re looking for.

Our Breathlessness Diagnostic package gives you:

  • Clear, joined-up answers: Both your heart and lungs are assessed simultaneously so nothing is missed, giving you certainty and clear next steps. For many, the relief of a clear explanation, even when it means starting treatment, is significant.
  • Peace of mind: Identifies serious but treatable conditions like heart failure or atrial fibrillation early, meaning intervention can be started right away to prevent your health declining and the condition progressing.
  • Targeted referrals: Direct pathways to respiratory specialists if the issue is in your lungs, not your heart.

DELIVERING EXCELLENCE

Above And Beyond Routine Health Checks

This diagnostic package will help determine if the cause of breathlessness is related to a cardiac condition or if an onward referral to a respiratory specialist is required.

By combining non-invasive functional tests, imaging, and lab tests, with specialist interpretation, this package goes much further than standard health checks, providing a personalised, test-based picture of your heart and lungs health. For ultimate peace of mind.

Initial & Follow-up consultation with a consultant cardiologist

An in-depth conversation about your symptoms, what triggers them, your history, and risk factors. It’s the foundation for everything that follows. At your follow-up, your cardiologist will go through test results, diagnosis, and what happens next.

Comprehensive blood tests

Covers cholesterol, blood glucose, thyroid, kidney and liver function, and NT-proBNP, a blood marker that rises when the heart is under strain and is a key early signal for heart failure.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

A quick, painless check of your heart's electrical activity, looking for rhythm problems or signs of strain that can sit quietly behind breathlessness.

Echocardiogram (heart ultrasound)

A real-time look at the structure of your heart and how it is functioning, including pump strength, valve health, and whether pressure in the lung circulation is raised.

Chest X-ray

Checks for fluid on the lungs, an enlarged heart, or lung changes such as scarring or infection.

Lung spirometry test

Measures how much air you can move and how quickly, screening for conditions like asthma, COPD, or other causes of restricted breathing.

Q&A

Your Breathlessness Questions Answered

It is completely normal to feel a bit winded after a strenuous workout or a brisk walk up a long flight of stairs. However, when you experience breathlessness on exertion, unexpectedly or during routine daily activities that don’t normally cause it, it can be an early warning sign of an underlying concern.

While breathlessness is technically a symptom itself, the way it manifests can vary from person to person. Common breathlessness symptoms and associated sensations include:

  • A feeling of suffocation: Feeling as though you cannot get enough air into your lungs, no matter how deeply you try to inhale.
  • Chest tightness: A heavy, constricted, or tight feeling in your chest that makes taking a full, satisfying breath difficult.
  • Labored breathing: Panting, wheezing, or having to work visibly harder to draw a breath, even while at rest.
  • Positional breathing difficulty (Orthopnea): Needing to prop yourself up with multiple pillows to breathe comfortably while lying down.

Surprisingly, breathlessness is one of the most common symptoms of heart conditions. Breathlessness causes can include heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and valve disease, but it can equally come from the lungs, or from both systems at once. The only way to know is to look at both, which is what our Breathlessness Diagnostic Package is designed to do.

Heart failure means the heart is not pumping as effectively as it should, which causes fluid to build and breathlessness to develop. Despite what the term suggests, it doesn’t mean the heart has stopped or is about to. Many people with heart failure manage it well with the right treatment, but getting that diagnosis early, rather than late, makes a real difference to how well it can be controlled and how much it impacts your future health.

NT-proBNP is a protein the heart releases when it’s under pressure. When levels are elevated in a blood test, it’s often the first sign that the heart is struggling, sometimes even before an echocardiogram shows anything obvious. Including it means this package can pick up heart strain at the earliest possible stage.

This pattern, worse when lying down, better sitting up, is called orthopnoea and it is a recognised symptom of heart failure. It happens because fluid redistributes to the lungs when you lie flat. If this is something you experience regularly, it’s worth mentioning at your consultation.

Anxiety genuinely can cause breathlessness, and it’s worth raising at your appointment. But it should be a conclusion reached after ruling out physical causes, not the default assumption. This assessment makes sure nothing cardiac or respiratory is being missed before any other explanation is settled on.

The package includes both a chest X-ray and spirometry specifically so that respiratory causes are not overlooked in what is primarily a cardiology setting. If findings point that way, we have direct referral pathways to respiratory specialists and will make sure your onward care is properly coordinated.

If everything comes back normal, this is a genuinely positive outcome, and it’s one worth having confirmed properly rather than assumed. Your cardiologist will still go through the results with you and discuss whether de-conditioning, lifestyle factors, or anything else might be contributing. If symptoms continue despite normal findings, next steps will be discussed at that point.

Most patients complete the full package in a single visit or across two closely scheduled appointments. Blood results including NT-proBNP come back quickly, and follow-up is arranged promptly so you’re not left waiting.

No, you can come directly. Any previous results or letters are useful to bring but are not a requirement.

We partner with Chrysalis Finance to offer instalment plans, subject to status and credit checks. These plans typically allow treatment costs to be spread over several months or years with fixed monthly payments and flexible deposit options. Please ask our team for more details.
